Nintendo Pro Switch Controller

Excellent battery lifespan and value

This is the officially licensed controller for Nintendo Switch and allows for gamers of all abilities to dive into their favourite worlds. Included is a built-in battery with an incredible lifespan of up to 40 hours, making it easy to dive into a game for an afternoon or two without a second thought about switching the controller. Note; there is no headphone jack, however, so you will need to connect directly to the Switch.

PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller

A personalized feel for gaming

If you like customizing your gaming experience, this controller has you covered with several different colours and themes. You'll have to expect less for its battery life — at 30 hours — than the Pro Controller, and do make sure to have Bluetooth and two AA batteries on hand to get the most out of your experience. Luckily, you'll get an LED warning light when the juice begins to run out.

Best Wired GameCube Controller

HORI Smash Brothers GameCube

No batteries required

This fully wired GameCube style Switch controller includes a 10-foot cable so you can sit back while playing. However, the cable cannot detach as it is not a USB, so make sure to take good care of it. The officially licensed Nintendo controller has a large D-pad and adds several buttons from the original GameCube controller.

Best Wireless GameCube Controller

PowerA Wireless Controller

Includes big D-pad and shoulder buttons

GameCube fans will love the options on this PowerA Wireless Controller. It enhances GameCube's functionality with enlarged D-pad and shoulder buttons, making them easier to find during an intense battle or jumping puzzle. You also get more buttons than the original Switch. Two AA batteries will keep you running for up to 30 hours, and an LED light indicator will let you know when the battery gets low. Bluetooth will help you operate wirelessly.

Best Retro Controller

Bitdo SN30 Pro

Works like the SNES, but better

If you've been gaming with Nintendo for a few decades, you'll appreciate the look and feel of this controller as it nearly perfectly replicates the Super NES controller. But don't be fooled by appearances – this is an upgrade over the SNES. You'll find Bluetooth, an internal battery and be able to play for up to 20 hours. This is a shorter battery life than the other reviewed controllers here, but unless you're playing for long gaming marathons you should be okay if you charge between gaming sessions.

Bottom line

The Pro Controller is your best choice for Nintendo Switch, thanks to its motion controls and HD rumble – allowing you to enjoy action RPG and battle royale games alike. Its wireless battery life can't be beat; the only thing you'll sacrifice is the headphone jack, but most other controllers don't have that either.

As more controllers come out for Switch, we'll keep an eye out for those that will suit you best!
