Jackery Power station: What I like

If variety is the spice of life, then the Jackery Explorer 1000 (E1000) power station is an entire spice cupboard. There are so many ways to use the E1000, each catered to by the plethora of outputs available on the front. Whether you are looking to charge phones, tablets, or laptops, or running a TV or blender, or in my case, a giant 3D printer, there is an output for you. 

I don't want to get bogged down in too many numbers, but you can see from the image below that the E1000 alone can power many things, lots of times. The idea of having 100 charges for my phone while out camping for 10 days is enough to make me recommend it.

To really put the Jackery Explorer through its paces, I hooked it up to my largest 3d printer, the Lulzbot Workhorse, and ran it just like I would if it was connected to mains power. On average, the 3D printer used 200 watts of power and would have lasted around 16 hours on just battery power alone. I live in Southern California, though, and even in the winter, the sun is bright and powerful. I hooked up the solar panels for about six hours during the day, and the panels gave me around 185w of power to offset the 3D printer usage.

This meant, for the six hours that the solar panels were in use, the battery only lost about 90w, or nine percent of the total battery. This left me plenty of power to finish the 14-hour print overnight with power to spare. This makes the Jackery an ideal battery backup for the occasional power cut at home, as the 1000w battery coupled with the two solar cells can keep your fridge or your internet running long enough for the power to come back.

It is worth noting that these solar panels don't do well in bad weather. These are not designed to be left out in the rain or snow but to be put out when you can to top up the battery.

Speaking of charging. Given how much power the Jackery uses, you can imagine it takes a while to charge from empty. If you are charging from mains or a generator, it will take around seven hours which is fine, and if you charge from solar power, you can get a full charge in around eight. That is, of course, if you have eight hours of good light. 

The E1000 does have another way to charge, though, and that is through a car outlet. You don't want to use it if you don't have to, as it takes 14 hours to charge fully, but it will help in a pinch if you need it. 

When out camping, I found I was only topping up the Jackery and not charging it from empty. On the first day, we arrived the Jackery was at 100 percent. During the day, I put the solar panels up and used the E1000 for charging four phones, a DSLR camera battery, my MacBook, and my wife's iPad. 

By the time the sun went down, the solar panels had kept the charge up at 95, and by morning, we were down to 85 percent. The next morning the panels went up again, and because everything had been charged overnight, we got the battery back up to 98 percent before using it again. And so the cycle continued. By the time we got back home, the Jackery had never dipped below 40 percent, and the solar panels kept us going the whole time.

When I think about the Jackery Explorer 1000 bundle, there isn't a lot that needs work. Is it expensive? Yes, it is. It is also a full system comprising two solar panels and a massive power station. In the case of the E1000, you get what you pay for, and what you pay for is pure power. If the cost is too high for you, but you want a similar system, you can get the Jackery E500. It is a smaller power station and only works with one solar panel, but it is significantly cheaper.

My only other small complaint is the length of the cables for the solar panels. While they are 10 feet long, and that seems like a lot, it often means the power station needs to be close to the panels at all times. The panels have helpful stands to get the right angle, but you still need to move them around a lot to keep catching the most amount of sun. Ideally, I would want 20-foot cables to allow me to put them on the top of an RV or have the panels further away from the campground.

As you can see, these problems are not really with the system itself as the E1000, and the SolarSaga worked beyond my expectations.

Jackery Power station: The competition

The Anker Powerhouse 2 is a slightly smaller system than the Jackery Explorer 1000, and while it doesn't come with a solar panel, Anker does have them available to purchase. The power station feels far more suited to a single-day trip or overnight stay where you would need to recharge phones and laptops instead of camping for an extended time. 

The 500w limit on devices is also somewhat limiting for longer trips that might require an electric grill or something that consumes a lot of power.

The Eco flow Power station is a recharging machine. It can recharge from zero to 80 percent in just one hour from the mains and only takes around 4 hours to charge to full power on the solar panels. Coupled with the six AC outputs, four USB-A (two of them fast charging), and two 60W USB-C, the Eco Flow is a great all-around choice, at least it would be if it wasn't for the cost. 

The Eco Flow is almost as expensive as the Explorer 1000 bundle, but it doesn't include any solar panels. While I think the Eco Flow is a good alternative, the cost is prohibitive.

From prams to bottle warmers, room thermometers to baby monitors, these are our picks of the products parents are likely to want and need.

We’ve taken a middle-ground approach to price: in each category there are considerably cheaper and more expensive options, but the one we’ve chosen is the one we’d buy with our own money, budget permitting. So for example if money’s no object you might happily drop £1,000-plus on a travel system - but we think for many parents Mothercare’s sub-£300 option makes more sense. 

It’s possible to get many baby items second hand to save money, of course, but there are several items you should buy new. Don’t buy used car seats, because you can’t always see if they’ve been damaged; and don’t buy used mattresses, because you’ve no idea what could be lurking inside them.

If you do manage to snap up any pre-loved bargains and have some cash left over, mums can treat themselves to that new mascara they've been eyeing up, or a luxury face mask for some much-needed downtime. 

Winner of the prestigious Made for Mums Gold Award in 2017, the Cloud Q ticks almost all of the boxes for a car seat the midwives will let you take baby home in: the only real negative is that it isn’t compatible with i-Size, the incoming car seat regulations that apply to new seats from 2018 onwards. It’s a Group 0+ seat, so it’s suitable from birth to around 18 months or 13kg, and it has side impact protection, a sun canopy that isn’t too fiddly and a useful lie-flat feature for keeping baby undisturbed once you’re home. The SnuzPod is a lovely looking thing, but it’s not a case of style over substance. It’s as practical as it is pretty, with curved lower rails for gentle rocking and a mesh wall to keep baby from rolling out. It’s designed to be three products in one: a Moses basket, a bedside co-sleeping cot or as a standalone crib, and it does all three things very well. The SnuzPod is height adjustable between 37 and 58cm and includes a mattress; it’s a non-standard size but it’s the same as the Chicco Next2me, so getting bedding shouldn’t be too difficult or expensive. If you fancy designer style but don’t have a designer budget, this recently reduced Mamas & Papas cot package is very good value for money. The cot itself has three height positions for easy access, an over-cot baby change station, under-cot storage and a mattress too. The design is clean if a little bland, but it won’t dominate the room the way some more overstated cots can do - and it takes up considerably less space than cute but enormous sleigh beds, which seem like a great idea until you have to move them around. If you’re looking for something a bit nicer than a budget cot but don’t want to spend really enormous amounts of money this is an excellent package.

The Koo-di Lottie is a very popular choice on Amazon and with good reason: it’s a Mother & Baby Award winner thanks to its smart design and sensible fabric choice. Polyester might not be the most sumptuous material but it’s water repellent and easy to clean, and believe us that matters. Particularly well suited to the British weather it has three internal pockets, an insulated bottle holder, a strap for keys and six external pockets, so you can segregate dirty stuff and have essentials such as wipes and dummies to hand without having to rummage for ages. Our only niggle is that the shoulder strap is quite short, so it’s only usable as a shoulder bag if you’re quite small. If this bag isn't your style, we have a whole range of changing bags picked out for all the yummy mummies and daddies out there to choose from.

Chances are when you go to the baby aisle, you’ll see the Tommee Tippee logo: it’s the big daddy or mummy of baby kit in the UK, and its closer to nature bottles are pricey but effective. They’re also big, and this bottle warmer has been designed to accommodate them as well as food jars and pouches. It takes about four minutes to warm 150ml of milk from room temperature; if it’s been refrigerated it will of course take longer. Just watch out for the lack of an automatic shut-off: it doesn’t turn off when you lift the bottle, jar or pouch out. You could achieve the same results with a bowl and kettle, but it means you’re not messing around with boiling water when you’re too tired to see.

We previously recommended a different Xpedior model, but that deal has been discontinued. Never mind, because here’s another good Xpedior deal: for £275, £75 less than RRP, you get this three-wheeled pram and travel system. That means it can be used as a lay-flat pram, as a buggy, or with the seat unit left at home and the car seat attached to the frame instead. The pneumatic tyres - a pump is included - make short work of rougher terrain and the double front wheel makes it more stable than other three-wheelers. When you compare the cost of this system to other brand-name travel systems you’ll see that it’s a lot of pram for not a lot of money.

Let’s get the obvious advice out of the way first: baby will outgrow it quite quickly, and you’ll probably end up using a cheap mat on the floor after a few weeks anyway. That said, if you want to keep baby stuff organised it does make life considerably less messy - provided you have the room for yet another bit of furniture. If a cot-top changing station isn’t ideal, we’d recommend something that can live on as a nice bit of furniture after its changing days are over, and Mamas and Papas’ Atlas Dresser is just that: cute enough for a baby’s room but not so cute it’d look odd in an older child’s room.

Luvion might not be a household name, but it wowed the judges of the Mother and Baby Awards: in 2017 this baby monitor won the prestigious Gold award in its category. It supports up to four cameras with split and quarter screen viewing, has LED lights to alert you when you’ve got the sound switched off, has a nightlight option and preset lullabies to help soothe your child and offers both infrared night vision and room temperature monitoring. The main draw here, though, is the relatively huge screen: it’s seven inches diagonally, with touch-sensitive buttons below the display and a joystick to control the camera. It’s very easy to use and the supplied camera includes a ceiling mount and fixings.

We’re huge fans of the original Gro Egg: instead of trying to remember whether 19.2 degrees is good or bad for baby, it enabled us to see instantly whether our babies’ rooms were too hot, too cold or just right. It does that with a simple colour code: it glows blue if it’s too cold, red if it’s too warm, and yellowy-orange when the temperature’s fine. The new model is currently exclusive to John Lewis and is 33% bigger, with four adjustable brightness levels. That’s handy, because the original could be awfully bright - but then again, your baby may prefer a brighter nightlight, and the Egg 2 can do that too. It’s a brilliant idea made a little bit more brilliant in its second generation.

With three separate sections the Tippitoes Top and Tail bowl is ideal for cleaning newborns’ faces and bottoms - the latter after the former, of course - as there’s room to keep your clean water, clean cotton wool buds and used wool buds separate. When baby’s old enough for normal bathing the bowl is still useful as an organiser for your various changing essentials. The promo photos on Amazon make it look like it’s dark grey on the outside and white inside; that’s a shadow, not a design element. The whole thing is ivory coloured. It’s also worth noting that Tippitoes’ bowl is one of the larger ones you can buy: it’s 40 x 24 x 11cm.

If you don’t have the time between exciting day trips and glamorous dinners to devour a whole 500-page novel, then something split up into bite-sized chunks can come in very handy indeed. That’s not to say that you won’t feel the temptation to gulp down all of Samantha Irby’s essays in one go, of course. When combing for beach reads, it’s hard to beat a book about the beach. But while Mary Kay Andrews is widely considered queen of the genre, The High Tide Club actually takes something of an unexpected turn, which is entirely to its (and its author’s) credit. If we had to choose, our all-round best first-person shooter would be Overwatch. If you’ve been living under a rock since 2016, that’s the all-guns-blazing objective-based shooter that’s joyfully co-operative, with gameplay that’s both welcoming to inexperienced players and rewarding of skilful play. 

What’s a first-person shooter without friends? Overwatch sees you put together a ragtag bunch of multi-talented misfits to complete objectives, whether it’s the complex, capable AI giving you backup or your real-life posse lending a hand over multiplayer. Rather than simply button-mashing and wreaking havoc on the avatars that get in your way, it makes you think about how each member of your team fits in to the action, and while skilled play means you can win big (and gloat over that gravity-defying move you just pulled in replay) it’s altogether a very accessible option, no frustratingly steep learning curve in sight, making it great fun for all ages. 

No matter what kind of game you’re looking for, it’s likely Destiny 2 is right up your street. How can we be so sure? Well, it’s basically everything you could want in a first-person shooter: good-looking graphics, smooth gameplay, a story that hooks you in with hints of RPG, and a super-addictive multiplayer mode. But it’s not all about the team play. In fact, a big part of this sequel’s appeal is its strong campaign, a huge improvement on the original’s, which reviewers found somewhat lacking, while antsy players who don’t want to sink hours into a linear story mode will love the huge number and array of side activities. 

Of all the first-person shooter games that could reasonably be subtitled “alien trouble” (and there are a lot) Half Life 2 has to be one of the best. While even this hotly-anticipated sequel is now old enough to have achieved the classic status of its predecessor, it still stands up to several replays. It’s just as suspenseful as the original Half Life, but more responsive, realistic and detailed than ever, as evident in everything from the behaviours of your enemies to the impact your avatar, crowbar-wielding scientist Gordon Freeman, has on his environment. Oh, and you can launch toilets at your enemies. Sold.

Between space dinosaurs and the ability to jump between realities in combat, Titanfall 2 is far from your typical shooter. It’s not as silly as it sounds though. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that it’s video game combat, perfected. With the smoothest mechanics of any game out there right now, even the most mundane moves are a treat to perform, although once you get used to the gravity-defying melee action, you’ll probably find it hard to stop yourself pulling off jetpack jumps at every available opportunity. And in the middle of all that action, there’s still room for a story, and for some surprisingly warm relationships to be forged between man and war machine. 

While there’s very little that’s Overwatch-esque about Rainbow Six Siege, the two games do have one thing in common: in both arenas, sound tactics can mean the difference between triumph and game over. In the short, adrenaline-fuelled rounds, every move counts, and whether you’re strategising in the main campaign or engaging in turbo-powered firefights in 5 v 5 multiplayer mode, you’re assured of a dynamic playing experience thanks to superbly reactive environments that respond realistically to your onslaughts. If you really like that nervous feeling that comes from playing an immersive, high-stakes tactical shooter, reviewers say you’ll love this.

Intergalactic mecha soldiers and gorilla scientists are all very well and good, but if you’re after something a little less silly and a lot (a lot) more serious, Battlefield 1 is the one to look to for your FPS fix. An amazingly sensitive retelling of combat in the world’s most devastating conflict, this Great War-set shooter is sensory overload, with suitably overwhelming – but gorgeously realised – settings from a muddy, rat-infested No Man’s Land to intense dogfights seen from the cockpit of a bi-wing attack plane. There are also some great multiplayer modes to get your teeth into, from standard capture the flag games to War Pigeons mode. 

Just when you thought there was no more room for improvement in the first-person shooters arena, PlayStation went and brought virtual reality into the equation. The result is Superhot, the only VR FPS on our list, and by all accounts a thoroughly awesome experience. With its blocky graphics and stark settings a far cry from the super-realism of some of the other games in our list, it has a uniquely unsettling atmosphere, and its gameplay is one of a kind, too. In Superhot, time is slowed down, giving the impression you’ve called in your spidey senses to be able to react superhumanly fast to threats and, in short, feel like a total badass. 

For alternative history buffs, the Wolfenstein series is the gift that keeps on giving. While not unrelentingly grim, it is a little like a choose-your-own-ending book where none of the outcomes are good, and there are some challenging cutscenes that give the slightly time-worn “what if the Nazis won WWII” trope some new, unsettling life, as well as startlingly thoughtful details throughout that make the whole thing immersive. Elsewhere though, it’s unapologetic about being a straightforward, ultra-violent shooter. Want to kill some Nazis? Okay. Want to do it dual-armed with a laser rifle and a throwing knife? Be our guest.

Reviewers commented on the huge contrast range that worked brilliantly when faced with HDR content, and while, perhaps surprisingly, it doesn’t register the lowest lag speeds of the options in our list, the fact that you can activate the fast-response Game mode while playing in HDR is a huge bonus. And besides, while that rate isn’t overly high, the stunning picture quality all but cancels it out anyway. If you’re after a screen that’ll make those graphics really pop, this is the one. 

The Sony KD65ZD9BU might be the absolute best when it comes to faithfully recreating painfully beautiful game graphics, but not all of us have two-and-a-half large to spend on a new TV, especially if we’ve just shelled out for the PS4 Pro and a clutch of the latest games. You’ll be pleased to hear, then, that the Samsung UE55MU7000 is a QLED marvel, and a great gaming option, at a much more sensible price. With a 120Hz panel, making for an admirable refresh rate, you won’t be left hanging while you’re in the thick of the action, and the price tag-defyingly thin design and high-contrast screen are a wonder to behold. 

If you don’t want backlight issues to get in the way of your enjoying the on-screen action, your choices are essentially between our first-choice Sony, or an LG-exclusive OLED TV like this one. The LG C7 is the best of the bunch for image quality, largely thanks to its ability to emit light from the individual pixels themselves rather than from a backlight, resulting in beautiful contrast.

Reviewers experienced no motion blur whatsoever when testing out this TV, and revelled in the high-speed pixel response and excellent viewing angles, which mean that even if you’re all crammed in during multiplayer madness, those sat at an awkward angle to the screen will experience the same true colours, deep inky blacks and bright but not blown-out whites as someone sat right in front of it.

QLED might have initially been dismissed by aficionados as an off-brand OLED (see above) but Samsung have ably disproved that notion with the QE49Q7F, the starter model in the company’s QLED range. Sure, it’ll still cost you, but at around £1,000 cheaper RRP than LG’s most affordable OLED, with a smaller screen which many will find a bonus, it’s stiff competition.

In a smart-looking package, all slim bezels, elegant hardware and superior cable management, reviewers say it lives up to Samsung’s considerable gaming TV pedigree. It’s got a dedicated Game mode that automatically selects when you switch on your console, and perhaps most importantly of all, a really minimal lag of around 24ms, making for insanely fast play. Throw in punchy colours too, and it’s really great all round. 

We’ll level with you: this 4K HDR TV is far from a flagship, and might not win any awards for refresh rates or pin-sharp picture quality, but at just shy of £500, you wouldn’t expect it to. Easily the most affordable TV for gaming on our list, it’s an HDR gaming-ready model that won’t break the bank, making it accessible to those who don’t have a lot to spend, but still want a chance at the latest tech. That’s something we can definitely get behind.

Reviewers found there was a little motion blur, so it might be better kept for slower-paced RPGs, but that the contrast was passable, with the presence of some local dimming. Overall, if you’re looking for a future-proof TV for not much dosh, this might be it.

Another affordable 4K TV, this LG model sits at around £550 RRP, and manages to offer a surprising amount for that price. Its HDMI 2.0 ports give the option for 4K gameplay at a zippy 60fps, and the TV’s own refresh rate of 120Hz is nothing to be sniffed at either, offering amazingly smooth visuals that are just right for making the most of the fantastically fluid mechanics of games like Titanfall 2.

Best of all? One tester reported an input lag of just 15ms. That’s far and away the lowest on our list, and almost akin to what you’d get on a dedicated gaming monitor, which is pretty incredible anyway, but especially for the low price.
